Fontconfig is a library for font customization and configuration.

The current stable series is 2.6. The latest version in that series is 2.6.0 which can be found in the release directory along with a change log from 2.5.93.
A description of the differences between the 2.3 and 2.4 series can be found in the 2.4 release notes. These also apply to 2.5 and 2.6 which are ABI and API compatible with 2.4.

The Xft library is available from the xlibs project at freedesktop.org. Released Software.
Web fonts
Microsoft has made the common web fonts available free of charge; please read the license before downloading them.
Redhat has made free fonts (GPL+exception) available: Sans (a substitute for Arial, Albany, Helvetica, Nimbus Sans L, and Bitstream Vera Sans), Serif (a substitute for Times New Roman, Thorndale, Nimbus Roman, and Bitstream Vera Serif) and Mono (a substitute for Courier New, Cumberland, Courier, Nimbus Mono L, and Bitstream Vera Sans Mono).
